In an exciting development for Northwestern University, the new Global Hub has opened its doors, marking a significant milestone for the Kellogg School of Management. This state-of-the-art facility promises to foster collaboration and creativity among students and faculty, thanks in part to the innovative furniture solutions provided by Henricksen.
Designed with the core needs of a business school in mind, the Global Hub spans five stories and encompasses an impressive 415,000 square feet. It features two atriums and a thoughtfully arranged array of common areas, flexible classrooms, and conference spaces. With a focus on creating environments that encourage interaction, the building is set to become a vibrant hub for learning and innovation.
“The thing that we’re all talking about is the collaboration,” remarked Linda Darragh, a faculty member and Director for Kellogg’s Innovation and Entrepreneurship Initiative. “I’ve seen students I hadn’t seen in months.” Her words reflect the building’s success in cultivating a collaborative atmosphere, where students can engage deeply with one another and their coursework.
Henricksen’s role in this project has been crucial. Their carefully selected furniture not only complements the building’s design but also enhances the overall learning experience. From traditional study lounges and a bustling cafeteria to a cutting-edge design lab complete with a maker space and 3D printer, the furniture fosters an environment that promotes teamwork and creative thinking.
The design team, led by Toronto-based KPMB Architects, opted for a layout that avoids a single central atrium, instead creating interconnected spaces that flow seamlessly into one another. This approach encourages movement and interaction, allowing students to find their own niches for study and collaboration. Large windows throughout the building showcase breathtaking views of the Chicago skyline, adding to the inspiring atmosphere.
Architectural critic Blair Kamin praised the Global Hub’s design, calling it “carefully wrought” and “spatially complex.” He noted that the building is poised to impart valuable lessons in collaboration, boldness, and flexibility to future business leaders. During the official opening ceremony, Kellogg Dean Sally Blount expressed her pride in the project, stating, “That’s like our project brief. We must have all done something right.”
As students settle into their new surroundings, the Global Hub stands as a testament to the power of thoughtful architectural design and collaborative partnerships. By prioritizing collaboration, innovation, and flexibility, this landmark building not only meets the needs of its users but also inspires a new generation of leaders. The enthusiastic feedback from faculty and students reaffirms the project’s success and its potential for fostering a vibrant learning community.
